Homeswest Bond Assistance

The Department of Housing and Works (Homeswest) offers bond assistance as an interest-free loan to help people secure accommodation in the private rental market. The loan is repaid in regular payments of at least $15 per fortnight. You can call into any Homeswest office (no appointment is necessary) and your application will be processed immediately. You will need to supply documents to show proof of income and identity. If approved for bond assistance, Homeswest will confirm this with your landlord and arrange for prompt payment. The maximum level of assistance for a single person is $500. For further information on Bond Assistance contact the Perth City Office on 9476 2444. ON-CAMPUS HOUSING

Student Village

The Murdoch University Student Village provides on-campus accommodation for around 530 students. There are 98 self-contained flats in the three-hectare Village, with up to eight study bedrooms in each flat. Most students have their own single room, but some students choose to share one of 33 twin share rooms the Student Village has to offer. All flats are fully furnished and equipped with basic cooking utensils. The Village is located within walking distance of the Kardinya Park and Winthrop shopping centres and is on a major bus route, providing easy access to local shops as well as the thriving port city of Fremantle and the Perth CBD. Residents of the Student Village are expected to live together communally, co-operatively and responsibly. Behavioural standards apply. Weekly rates start at $90 for a single room. Homeswest

Homeswest provides affordable public housing to low-income earners. To be eligible you must:

  • Be an Australian citizen or permanent resident
  • Live in and receive your income in Western Australia
  • Not own land or property
  • Not have cash assets of $36,400 (single); $60,000 (couples) or $80,000 for seniors.

Co-operative Housing

Housing co-operatives are non-profit incorporated associations managed by their members offering secure, long-term, quality housing.

  • Each co-operative is unique as it reflects the needs and ideas of its members.
  • Co-operatives can be a positive alternative if you want to have a say in the management and, for establishing co-ops, the design of your housing.
  • There are also the benefits of living in a supportive community.
  • Co-operatives have some of the benefits of home ownership without the financial problems.
  • Rents are capped at 25 percent of gross income (plus any rent assistance received) up to market rent. .
  • Waiting lists and membership processes apply and you must meet Homeswest eligibility criteria.

Housing Associations

Housing Associations are run on the Principle of Co-operation and are democratic, non-profit and do not discriminate against people. They aim to educate their members and the wider community in democratic and economic co-operation. Housing associations are like housing co-operatives, but the people who manage them are not usually the tenants. Housing Associations are committed to providing long-term affordable accommodation for people on low incomes. Waiting lists apply in most cases. Fremantle Housing Association

Provides housing to people on low incomes in the Fremantle and Rockingham/Kwinana regions. There are units, flats and houses in many suburbs in the area. We also have some complexes for groups such as single women and older people. Howard Court is an 18 unit complex in Coolbellup. Currently the tenants are a mix of international students attending Murdoch University and general housing applicants. CRISIS & SUPPORTED ACCOMMODATION

Crisis and supported accommodation is offered by a range of government and non–government funded agencies with the aim of providing support and assistance for individuals and families in crisis and in need of safe, affordable and/or transitional housing.

Fremantle Community Youth Service

Ages: Singles and couples under 20 years of age, 25 years and under for families.

Provides medium to long-term accommodation and support. Frequent waiting period of 6-12 month. Phone: 9432 9824

Perth City Mission

Provides supported accommodation for young people.

15 - 18 year old crisis accommodation.

16 - 25 yr olds: short to medium term accommodation (usually no more than 3 month)

Victoria Park Youth Accommodation

Provides external accommodation support for youth aged 15 to 25 years for periods of six to twelve months with the aim of helping people to live independently. NOT crisis accommodation.

HOMELESS HELP LINE 1800 065 892.

The primary purpose of the Help Line is to act as a central contact point for homeless people to find accommodation and to assist people at risk of being homeless to obtain assistance to seek their own accommodation. The Homeless Help Line liaises with relevant agencies, documents the details and liaises with Homeswest regional offices and non-government accommodation services to ensure urgent accommodation is arranged where applicable.
